Rebreather Intro to Cave / Cave Diver

Second step of training for Cave Diver level 3.

General Information

The Cave Diver 2 course represents the second step of the training required to complete the Cave Diver level 3 (Full Cave Diver) and develops basic cave diving skills with limited penetrations of the cave environment. This programme introduces students to the fundamental principles of full cave diving, but is not intended to cover all facets of full cave diving. Students are highly encouraged to move on to the next level of training before attempting to plan and execute more complex dives.

WHAT QUALIFICATIONS DO I NEED?

  • Must be a qualified as CCR Air diluent Diver or higher and Rebreather Cavern Diver or equivalent.
  • Must be a minimum of 18 years old.
  • Provide proof of a minimum of 50 logged dives and 30 hours on the rebreather unit used in training.
  • You will need to fill out a self-certification medical statement.

COURSE DURATION:

Minimum six (6) practical lessons in at least three to fourth (3-4) days. Minimum of six (6) dives in a minimum of two (2) different cave systems.

WHAT'S IN THE COURSE?

The participant shall have appropriate knowledge concerning the physical principles and their application to Cave Diving equipment and hazards relating to:

  • Policy for Cave Diving
  • Definitions of Cave Zones, Standards and safety rules for the safe exploration of Zones
  • Gas matching procedures and management
  • Calculation of gas consumption and of required gas supply
  • Streamlining and equipment considerations in Cave Zone
  • Communication: Hand signals, light signals, touch contact signals
  • Trim, buoyancy control
  • Propulsion techniques
  • Special requirements of underwater orientation in caves
  • Deploy guideline (reel, spool) Line following
  • Physiology: Breathing techniques, Stress management
  • Cave environment: Geology: Bottom, ceiling, Local access requirements; Landowner relations
  • Cave conservation
  • Problem Solving procedures
  • Accident analysis
  • Cave Diver’s Etiquette

PRACTICE IN WATER:

  • Demonstrate adequate pre-dive planning;
  • Equipment check and gear matching;
  • Pre-Dive check an bubble check;
  • Demonstrate specialized propulsion techniques in varying types of flow;
  • Demonstrate proper buoyancy and trim control;
  • Properly deploy a guideline;
  • Properly use line markers;
  • Properly follow a guideline with eyes open and closed (simulating loss of visibility);
  • Gas sharing with a buddy with eyes open, following the guideline;
  • Gas sharing with a buddy with lights off, eyes closed and use touch contact, following the guideline;
  • Remove and replace mask while in contact with guideline;
  • Demonstrate light / hand-signals and touch contact;
  • Conservation and awareness techniques;
  • Referencing as back-up navigation;
  • Demonstrate lost line and lost diver drills;
  • Simulate a primary light failure, and use back light to exit the cave;
  • Demonstrate proper stress analysis (detection and management).
